The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked concerns about a potential surge in anti-technology extremism, as some groups perceive advanced technologies as threats to their ideologies, control, or societal structures.

Mauro Lubrano, an author and technology researcher, has warned about this trend, comparing it to the anti-vaccine movement in its flexibility and potential for Maoist interpretation. Interestingly, Lubrano's research on this topic has been facilitated by the very technology that these extremists seek to destroy, as they extensively use digital platforms to share their ideologies and strategies.

The Role of AI in Radicalization and Terrorism

Extremist groups are increasingly exploiting digital platforms and encrypted messaging to radicalize and recruit younger demographics, who are particularly active online and vulnerable to rapid mobilization. The Islamic State (IS) and similar groups use digital operations as a key pillar of power projection, employing AI for propaganda targeting and recruitment strategies.

AI advancements are likely to speed up the radicalization process, making extremist messaging more persuasive and harder to detect before mobilization. Terrorist groups may also develop more autonomous weaponized technologies, such as AI-enhanced drones, broadening their operational capabilities for attacks and surveillance.

Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are increasingly monitoring AI-enabled threats, developing expertise and technology to counter AI-assisted extremist activities from online radicalization to drone-enabled attacks.

The Impact of AI on Society and the Environment

AI could place a burden on energy grids and the environment, which could contribute to the co-optation of far-left and far-right groups by extremist anti-technology groups. Data centres, symbols of economic aspirations in certain parts of the world, could become targets for such extremist groups.

However, it's important to note that experts surveyed by Pew Research were more likely to believe that AI will have a positive impact on society over the next 20 years (56% compared to 17% of the general public). Similarly, 73% of experts believe that AI will have a positive impact on jobs, while only 23% of the general public feels the same.

Despite these concerns, Mr. Lubrano does not believe that law enforcement agencies are incapable of dealing with a rising anti-technology extremist threat. He states that some level of violence will always be present in a democratic society, but good intelligence and good law enforcement have been able to disrupt similar threats in the past.
