Alexandria's AEDP Brings 2,700 HUD Jobs, Revitalizes City
The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) has been crucial in driving growth and revitalization in the city. Its latest achievement is the relocation of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), bringing 2,700 jobs near me to Alexandria. This marks the first 'Alexandria First' commitment, with HUD investing back into the community through partnerships with local schools and businesses.
AEDP's impact is evident in various projects. In 2017, it helped relocate the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to the Eisenhower Avenue building, now set to house HUD. The partnership also opened the Oakville Health Center in Potomac Yard, serving over 10,000 emergency patients and providing care to over 22,000 patients in primary care and specialty services.
Defense contractor Systems Planning and Analysis is creating almost 500 new jobs in Alexandria, investing $15 million in a new facility. A new Alexandria Hospital at the former Landmark Mall site is also underway, set to serve as a state-of-the-art tertiary care hospital and cancer center, transforming the West End area. AEDP's strategic choices, like selecting the Carlyle location for its new offices, aim to showcase Alexandria's potential to visiting businesses and prospects.
AEDP's annual impact meeting revealed it facilitated the creation or retention of 4,106 jobs, provided 312 hours of small business counseling, and hosted 42 events in the fiscal year. Success stories like Roberto Gomez, executive director of Cornerstone Craftsman, demonstrate AEDP's commitment to small business development and community growth. The conversion of the long-vacant Victory Center office building into 376 workforce and affordable housing units further underscores AEDP's positive influence on Alexandria.
