Algerian IT Expert Granted First Digital Nomad Visa in Kazakhstan
In a bid to boost its digital ecosystem and startup scene, Kazakhstan has launched two innovative programs aimed at attracting top foreign professionals, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital technologies. The Digital Nomad Visa and the Digital Nomad Residency programs, announced in 2024 by order of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, are designed to bring in global talent and diversify the country's economy [1][3].
The Digital Nomad Visa, priced affordably at $300, offers a simplified application process with no minimum income requirement. This makes it accessible to a wider pool of IT professionals from countries that require a visa to enter Kazakhstan. The visa allows remote work while living in Kazakhstan, providing an immersive cultural and economic experience [1].
The Digital Nomad Residency program, launched in January, is designed for citizens of visa-free countries, offering a faster procedure to obtain a residence permit. This program facilitates longer-term stays and integration within Kazakhstan [1].
More than 152 applications have been submitted under the Digital Nomad Visa program from 21 countries, including the United States, Canada, Turkey, Algeria, and countries from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Abdelmadjid Belmekki, an IT specialist from Algeria, has become the first recipient of the Digital Nomad Visa in Kazakhstan [2].
Belmekki, an experienced IT specialist, expressed confidence in the initiative's potential for attracting global talent and developing the startup ecosystem. He also recommended enhancing the program's official website by adding detailed information about taxes, legislation, business registration, and benefits for digital nomads [2].
The Digital Nomad Visa program does not specify any minimum income requirements, making it an attractive option for many IT professionals. The highest interest has come from specialists in software development, automation, and cybersecurity [2].
Another offering by Kazakhstan is the Neo Nomad Visa, which requires proof of a stable monthly income of $3,000 from the past six months and comprehensive medical coverage. It is targeted at remote workers and digital entrepreneurs globally and offers a one-year stay with a possible extension [2][4].
Citizens of 48 countries do not need an invitation letter to apply for the Neo Nomad Visa. The application process involves applying at Kazakhstan foreign institutions [4].
Belmekki chose Kazakhstan for remote work over countries such as Uzbekistan, Singapore, and Malaysia. He is eager to contribute to Kazakhstan's digital development and become part of its innovation ecosystem [2].
These programs are part of Kazakhstan’s strategy to diversify its economy, enhance its digital presence, and attract global talent in technology sectors [1][2][3].
