All-Day Fitness: Melanchthonstraße School in Bremer recognized as a nationwide role model
In a groundbreaking move, the "Full Day and Space" project was presented to the public in the gymnasium of a primary school in Bremen on September 10, 2024. Senator for Education, Sascha Karolin Aulepp, was present at the event.
The project, spearheaded by the House of the Senator for Children and Education, aims to continue the innovative approach to full-day care for schoolchildren. Aulepp acknowledged that the expansion of full-day care presents major challenges but offers the opportunity to rethink school and after-school care in a changing society.
The school at Melanchthonstraße in Bremen has been under the guidance of the "Montag Foundation Youth and Society" for a year, with the goal of making it a full-day school. The success of this project showcases the potential for innovative solutions to the challenge of converting schools into full-day schools, without the need for extensive new construction.
The integrated usage concept developed during the "Full Day and Space" project includes pedagogical, organizational, and spatial measures. Teachers, pedagogical staff, school management, and various other stakeholders have collaborated to develop this concept in the existing building at Melanchthonstraße school since September 2023.
Key strategies from this project include flexible space usage, ventilation and indoor comfort improvements, digitized facilities management, and minimal structural alterations. By repurposing existing rooms, improving ventilation, employing software for facilities management, and focusing on measures like improved scheduling and local environmental controls, the school has effectively implemented full-day education with minimal physical renovation.
The school at Melanchthonstraße was selected as one of four pilot schools nationwide for the project "Full Day and Space". Bremen operates 50 out of a total of 82 primary schools on a full-day basis as of 2024. However, spatial integration of school and youth welfare, as well as full-day utilization of all existing rooms, is still relatively uncommon nationwide.
Senator Aulepp provided an insight into the further implementation steps of the "Full Day and Space" project. The insights gained from this process are intended to be used by the state of Bremen for further locations. The project with the Montag Foundation Youth and Society aims to demonstrate that pedagogy, organization, and space can be integrated with minimal renovation for full-day education.
This approach preserves budgets while maximizing the functional life and usability of existing school infrastructures, setting a promising example for schools across Germany.
The "Full Day and Space" project, initiated by the House of the Senator for Children and Education, is focused on education-and-self-development and personal-growth, with the goal of transforming schools into full-day institutions. Senator Aulepp's collaboration with the Montag Foundation Youth and Society in Bremen is a demonstration of this concept, offering learning opportunities through integrated pedagogical, organizational, and spatial measures.
