In November 2024, the Youth Parliament is set to return to Düsseldorf, and young people aged 16 to 20 from Oberhausen have the opportunity to participate. SPD MPs Sonja Bongers, Frederick Cordes, and Stefan Zimkeit are organising this three-day event from November 7 to 9, 2024.

The Youth Parliament is open to young people who are in school, studying, in training, or employed. To apply, applicants must provide personal information such as date of birth, gender identity, contact details, current educational or employment status, and a short statement on why they want to participate in the Youth Parliament.

Successful applicants will have all costs, including accommodation, covered by the parliament. Once selected, they will take on the roles of MPs, actively shaping committees, faction meetings, and plenary sessions. The decisions made by the "Youth Parliamentarians" will be presented to the MPs of the "real" parliament.

This year's Youth Parliament will simulate parliamentary procedures and discuss current topics, much like previous years where debates have focused on promoting political education and addressing the skilled labor shortage in NRW.

Sonja Bongers, one of the organisers, believes that the Youth Parliament will help demonstrate the importance of young people committed to their positions and contributing to the future of NRW. She also states that this is a great opportunity for young people to experience democracy firsthand.

If you are a young person from Oberhausen aged between 16 and 20 and interested in participating, you can apply by contacting Sonja Bongers at [email protected] by August 5, 2024.

For precise and current application instructions, eligibility conditions, and timelines, it is recommended to consult the official City of Düsseldorf website or the NRW state youth parliament (Jugendparlament NRW) portals. These sources typically provide downloadable application forms, outline eligibility (such as residency or schooling in NRW/Oberhausen), and detail selection procedures like interview panels or random draws.

Frederick Cordes, another organiser, recalls that debates in previous Youth Parliaments have focused on topics such as promoting political education and addressing the skilled labor shortage in NRW. He emphasises the importance of young people's involvement in shaping the future of their region.

Participating in the Youth Parliament promises to be an enriching experience, providing insight into the parliamentary workday and offering a unique opportunity for young people to contribute to the political discourse in their region.

  1. The upcoming Youth Parliament in Düsseldorf, scheduled for November 2024, offers an excellent opportunity for young people in Oberhausen aged 16 to 20 to engage in politics and general news, as they can participate in debates focusing on promoting political education and addressing the skilled labor shortage in NRW.
  2. Apart from politics and general news, the Youth Parliament also encourages education and self-development, as successful applicants might find themselves immersed in a three-day event that simulates parliamentary procedures and offers a hands-on experience in democracy, shaping committees, faction meetings, and plenary sessions.
