On Monday, January 27, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir will take part in a live question-and-answer session from the International Space Station (ISS). The event will be emceed by UC San Diego Chancellor's Distinguished Professor of physics, Brian Keating, and Scripps Oceanography Director, Margaret Leinen, at both UC San Diego and Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Meir, a marine biologist and physiologist known for her research on how animals survive in extreme environments, will share her experiences from space and answer questions from the audience. Her academic background includes a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in marine sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in physiology related to blood oxygen transport in diving animals [1][4].

During her time at Scripps, Meir studied the diving physiology of penguins in Antarctica. Prior to the live stream, the visiting schools will hear from current graduate students at Scripps in a pre-event science panel.

The live stream can be watched at the 30-foot triptych inside the Expedition at Sea: R/V Sally Ride Gallery exhibit at Birch Aquarium at Scripps. For those who cannot attend in person, the event will be live streamed on the institution's Facebook and YouTube channels. The YouTube Live Stream link is https://youtu.be/JeUxdOZ8vcY?t=3860.

This Q&A session is supported by the Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund, like the one at UC San Diego. Nearly 150 students from Fulton Middle School and Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes will participate in the conversation at both UC San Diego and Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Admission is required to watch the live stream at Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Jessica Meir made history by participating in the first all-female space walks in October and earlier this month. Her research focus has been on diving physiology in emperor penguins and other animals adapted to extreme conditions, contributing to scientific knowledge before her astronaut career [1].

It is important to note that Jessica Meir is not associated with "Scripps Communications" in her academic or research history, according to current search results.
