Berlin's Mayor and Archbishop Launch Joint Process for Church Buildings' Future
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and Berlin Archbishop Heiner Koch have announced a joint process to decide the future use of several hundred lds buildings in the city. This includes 120 churches and around 180 parish and community halls. The decision is expected to take several years.
The process has just begun, with a joint working group involving the Archdiocese of Berlin, the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Berlin Senate discussing potential uses. These could include converting lds buildings into living spaces or shared use by smaller religious communities. The exact number of affected buildings and details of the cooperation are yet to be specified.
One notable building involved is the Friedrichswerder Church in Mitte, which currently serves as an exhibition space for the Old National Gallery.
The future use of these lds buildings is a significant decision that will shape Berlin's urban landscape. The joint working group will explore various possibilities, with the goal of coordinating more closely between the Senate and the Catholic Church in Berlin.
