Artificial Intelligence Seminars Highlight Cross-Border Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Dialogue

In a series of interdisciplinary AI seminars and conferences taking place in 2025–2026, experts will gather to discuss the challenges and implications of AI in a regional and cross-border context. These events will cover a range of topics, including legal, philosophical, and digital governance considerations.

The Cross-Border Seminar, organised by the Department for Italian Law, the Department of European Law and Public International Law, the Department of Legal Theory and Future of Law, and the Faculty of Law of Trento University, kicked off the series. The first event took place at the University of Innsbruck on April 3-4, while the second event was held at the Faculty of Law, University of Trento on May 8-9.

At the first event, student presentations delved into legal issues such as facial recognition technology, AI in dispute resolution, and data protection. The second event featured discussions on AI and children's rights, public decision-making algorithms, conscientious objection to AI, and digital data governance.

Notable keynote speakers at the events included Prof. Justus Piater, who gave a keynote on the technical foundations of artificial intelligence at the first event, and Prof. Lorenzo Perilli, who spoke about the philosophical implications of AI at the second event. Dr. Roberta Medda-Windischer also addressed the importance of algorithmic fairness in supporting minority rights and inclusion.

Both events emphasised the importance of regional cooperation and interdisciplinary dialogue. Informal networking opportunities, including a joint dinner, were available at both events to facilitate collaboration and idea-sharing among participants.

Looking ahead, applications for future editions of the Cross-Border Seminar will be announced through the university channels. For seminars or events explicitly centered on interdisciplinary AI challenges in a regional and cross-border context, including legal and philosophical issues and digital governance, participants may look toward events like IJCAI, ETAI, and arts-led AI summits in 2025. While none of these events are solely devoted to the legal implications, philosophical aspects, and digital governance of AI within a purely regional framework, they represent opportunities for cross-border, interdisciplinary dialogue on AI challenges spanning technical, ethical, social, and policy dimensions.

The Cross-Border Seminar is open to motivated students with an interest in European law, digital governance, and interdisciplinary research. These events underscore the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue in addressing the complex challenges posed by AI.

  1. The Cross-Border Seminar, emphasizing the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration, will continue to discuss AI challenges in education and self-development, particularly focusing on legal and philosophical issues and digital governance in future editions.
  2. In approaching the complex challenges of AI, participants can explore AI seminars and events such as IJCAI, ETAI, and arts-led AI summits for opportunities to engage in cross-border, interdisciplinary learning, covering technical, ethical, social, and policy dimensions.
