British teaching of the English language in Kazakhstan progresses with collaboration between the British Council and Orleu.

In a significant move to enhance English language teaching in Central Asia, the British Council in Kazakhstan and the Orleu National Center for Professional Development have signed a cooperation agreement for the second phase of the Accelerating English Language Learning in Central Asia (AELLCA) program [1].

The press service of the British Council reported the agreement on Aug. 6 [2]. The AELLCA program, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is being implemented in Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan [2].

The primary objective of the second phase is to improve the skills of English language teachers and trainers, accelerating English learning in the region through capacity-building activities [1]. To achieve this, the program will deliver online and in-person training sessions for CPD program designers and trainers, facilitated by both the British Council and Orleu [1].

The British Council, serving as the UK partner, will provide expertise, resources, and facilitate the trainings. On the other hand, the Orleu National Center for Professional Development, a Kazakhstani institution, will collaborate in organizing and hosting the trainings [1].

Orleu, the professional development hub for educators in Kazakhstan, will adapt and deliver the program content to suit local educator needs [1]. A methodological guide for Orleu's CPD program developers was produced during the first phase of AELLCA [3].

The training for the second phase of AELLCA will involve 16 master trainers and 64 trainers [4]. NILE serves as the academic lead for the AELLCA program [3].

A one-day forum focused on in-school CPD systems and a multilingual cascade training program in English, Russian, and Kazakh will be implemented during the second phase of AELLCA [1]. Five CPD courses were developed during the first phase of AELLCA, accredited by the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan, and included in the national course registry [4].

The second phase of the program will run from August this year to March 2026 [2]. This collaborative effort aims to significantly improve English language teaching capacity in Central Asia through comprehensive, accessible professional training for educators [1][2].

Through the partnership between the British Council and Orleu National Center for Professional Development, personal growth and self-development in education can be fostered by connecting with the AELLCA program, focusing on capacity-building activities and improving the skills of English language teachers and trainers. The learning opportunities in the second phase of the AELLCA program aim to enhance English language teaching in Central Asia, promoting thorough and accessible professional training for educators, contributing to the region's personal growth.
