Canada's Express Entry STEM Category Sees Major Changes, Affecting PR Eligibility
The STEM category in Canada's Express Entry system has seen significant changes, with 19 occupations removed and 6 added. This shift affects the eligibility of many foreign nationals seeking permanent residency, with some no longer qualifying and others newly eligible.
Previously, to be eligible for the STEM category, candidates needed at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in a category-eligible occupation within the past three years. Eligible occupations were determined by matching work experience with National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes and corresponding duties.
The updated STEM category now includes 11 occupations. Newly added roles are Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Geological Engineers, Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Mechanical Engineers, and Insurance Agents and Brokers. Notably, the 2026 approved list includes research and technology activities specifically in natural sciences, technology, mathematics, and computer science.
Qualifying for a category-based draw like STEM can significantly boost the chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residency. In 2024, the STEM draw had a lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off of 491, with 4,500 candidates receiving invitations to apply for PR.
The changes to the STEM category have led to many foreign nationals previously eligible losing their status, while others have newly gained eligibility. Those interested in the STEM category should review the updated list of eligible occupations and consider the potential benefits of qualifying for a category-based draw.
