Holy Cross Celebrates Fifty Years of Coeducation with a Series of Events

The College of the Holy Cross is currently celebrating the fifty-year milestone of coeducation with a variety of engaging events. These activities, which began in September 2022 and will continue until May 2024, are aimed at inviting back members of the classes of 1974, '75, and '76 for a sort of homecoming and reflection.

One of the most notable events was the showing of a compilation of Zoom interviews with female alumni, titled Voices from 1972: Stories from the First Women of Holy Cross. This compelling series was shown continuously in Hogan Rooms 402 and 328 over both days. Alumni spoke candidly about obstacles they encountered, ranging from unintentional errors and poor planning to outright prejudiced treatment.

Another significant event was the 'Sign of the Times' exhibit, which was part of the College's Celebration marking Fifty Years of Coeducation. This exhibit, held in the Hogan Campus Center, included a letter written by Peter M. Balesano, the director of the Hogan Campus Center in 1970, expressing concern about admitting women to Holy Cross. The letter was exhibited in the 'Sign of the Times' exhibit on last Friday and Saturday.

In addition to these events, an exhibition was held in the College Archives in Dinand, displaying items and documents revolving around the introduction of women to Crusader life. The HIV/AIDS Research Symposium, held at Rehm Library, was another event that was part of this celebration.

The College also hosted an event outside the Hogan Campus Center to make an impact in the fight against blood cancer, sickle cell, and other blood diseases. This event was organized in collaboration with a specific organisation, details of which were not provided.

These weekend events were branded with the motto '#LightingtheWay'. The College of the Holy Cross is committed to continuing this celebration and inviting alumni back to their alma mater to commemorate this significant milestone in the college's history.
