City of Academics Collaborates with Primetime for Enhancing STEM Learning Opportunities

Academic City University College has played host to the second edition of the Sci-Tech Fair, one of two events comprising the STEM Festival, an initiative of Primetime Limited, producers of the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ). This three-day event, taking place from September 22 to September 24, sees ten senior high schools compete in building projects from scratch on the theme 'Recycling - Transforming Waste into Reusable Products'.

The participating schools include Prempah College, Mfantiman Girls SHS, St. Augustine's College, Obuasi SHTS, Tamale SHS, and St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, as well as Archbishop Porter Girls, Our Lady of Grace SHS, Okuapemman School, and Ghana National College.

Recognizing the growing significance of STEM education, Academic City has partnered with Primetime to support the burgeoning field amongst youth. The goals of this partnership are to bolster opportunities for young Ghanaians to explore and exhibit their innovative ideas and encourage the study of STEM subjects in schools.

The Sci-Tech Fair will consist of two segments: an exhibition and a competition called the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge. This competition provides students and tech start-ups a unique setting to apply the scientific concepts they have learned in class by devising solutions or inventions that can help alleviate problems in Ghana.

The Sci-Tech Fair serves as a suitable platform for inspiring and influencing young Ghanaians with relevant knowledge and experience regarding how to harness the opportunities offered by STEM for Ghana's economic development. According to Dr. Lucy Agyepong, Associate Dean of Engineering at Academic City, "This initiative is vital for Ghana's socioeconomic development by leveraging the relevance of STEM."

The event is timely, given waste management and sanitation remain pressing issues in Ghana. Primetime hopes that the student projects will contribute to the campaign for proper waste management and provide a stage for innovative products addressing this issue to be displayed and potentially utilized.

Interpersonal skills, especially teamwork, are also emphasized during the competition. As Dr. Agyepong notes, "The students develop teamworking skills and even fostering camaraderie with their peers."

The Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge, a segment of the Sci-Tech Fair, offers students and tech start-ups an opportunity to report their creative ideas and develop solutions or inventions related to education-and-self-development, specifically stemming from the theme 'Recycling - Transforming Waste into Reusable Products'.
  2. Recognizing the importance of innovation and education in shaping the future, Academic City University College has partnered with Primetime Limited to bolster the development of STEM education amongst youth, aiming to encourage the study of these subjects and foster the presentation of innovative ideas.
  3.
