Congressional ambitions announced by previous Alexandria councilman, Seifeldein
Mohamed "Mo" Seifeldein, a former Alexandria City Councilman, has announced his intention to run for the Democratic nomination for Virginia's 8th Congressional District. Seifeldein, 41, served on the Alexandria City Council from 2019 to 2021 and made history as the first Sudanese American elected to the position.
Seifeldein's campaign focuses on universal healthcare, housing justice, workers' rights, food safety, and immigration reform. His policy priorities center on affordability and access, drawing from personal experience with financial hardship, including housing insecurity.
In his time on the Alexandria City Council, Seifeldein passed historic collective bargaining laws, protected renters from displacement, and reformed policing. He also sponsored Virginia's first independent Community Police Review Board and helped establish the 8 Corps program.
Seifeldein is not the only contender for the seat. Incumbent Rep. Don Beyer, 75, who announced his reelection bid in June, is also running. Beyer serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and as senior House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee. He reported $681,353 in cash on hand as of June 30, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Three other candidates are seeking the seat: Democrats Frank Ferreira and Heerak Christian Kim, and Republican Anthony Arthur Sabio. The primary and candidate filing dates for the 2026 election cycle have not been set yet. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026. More information will soon be available at moforcongress.com.
Seifeldein recently resigned from his role as an attorney at the U.S. Department of Labor in protest of what he described as the Trump administration's attacks on the federal workforce and policies targeting immigrants. His sole focus is now his congressional campaign.
Seifeldein's campaign slogan is "Go With Mo." He calls for ending "endless conflicts" and reinvesting in the people. Seifeldein supports paid family leave, with 76% of Americans supporting congressional action on the issue.
The 8th District, which includes Alexandria and parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties, is rated as safely Democratic. Seifeldein advocates for universal healthcare access, citing personal experience with being uninsured.
