Construction of accessible sports facility for the new school garnering community backing
The construction of a new inclusive school center in Greifswald, Germany, is currently in progress. The project, which is part of a larger development with an estimated total cost of around 80 million euros, includes a modern sports hall and spacious outdoor facilities.
The sports hall will measure approximately 24 by 45 meters and can be divided into three equal parts. It will feature markings for common sports such as football, handball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton, as well as a fitness room, a gymnastics room, an elevator, and a spectator tribune, including wheelchair places. Two changing rooms specifically for wheelchair users will also be included, ensuring the facility is accessible to all.
The sports hall will be equipped with environmentally friendly heating and cooling systems. About two-thirds of the 333 drilled piles will be activated geothermally, with plastic tubes woven into steel cages. In addition, a heat pump and photovoltaic system will be installed to reduce the building's carbon footprint.
The majority of heat generation for the school center will be provided by the city's district heating system. The European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) is contributing eight million euros to the construction of the sports hall and its outdoor facilities.
Furthermore, a new primary school with kindergarten and canteen will be constructed, with an additional 29 million euros in urban development funding allocated for the project. The educational campus will accommodate more than 700 students from the first to the tenth grade.
The first classes are expected to move into the new school center for the 2028/2029 school year. Earth excavation and infrastructure works for media and basic lines are already underway.
The funding decision for the new sports hall in Greifswald was handed over by Christian Pegel, Minister of Interior and Construction of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, to Mayor Dr. Stefan Fassbinder. However, the news results do not provide information on who handed over the building permit for the new sports center to Mayor Dr. Stefan Fassbinder on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The construction work is progressing steadily, and the community of Greifswald looks forward to welcoming the new school center in the near future.
