Crafting Homemade Polymer Clay Pens Perfect for Little Artisans!

Discover a unique and enjoyable art project that's perfect for kids of all ages! The project, known as "Tonpenne," was developed by Thorsten Baader, and it's an exciting way to transform ordinary pens into colourful, clay-covered masterpieces using Sculpey clay, pens, a baking pan, aluminum foil, and a craft mat or non-stick surface.

The project is suitable for both older children and younger kids with adult supervision. To begin, the clay is rolled around in hands to make it pliable and soft. While this step might be challenging for a 5-year-old, adult assistance might be needed. Roll the pen on the table and between hands to make it less lumpy.

Once the pen is prepared, cover it with flattened pieces of clay, bit by bit, over the barrel. Place the covered pen onto a foil-covered baking sheet and bake according to the package directions (typically 275 degrees for 15 minutes or so).

When it comes to choosing the right pen, opt for smooth plastic pens, preferably white, and if possible, remove the ink cartridge. Both methods, with and without removing the ink, work for the project. However, it's recommended to remove the ink cartridge if feasible, as all pens and ink are different.

Reusing the pens is possible if the cartridge is removable. However, keep in mind that "swag" pens might only be suitable for one use. Once the clay pen has cooled, insert any ink cartridges and your unique creation is ready to use!

The finished clay pens make for wonderful gifts for teachers, friends, or relatives. This project is a fun and engaging idea for back-to-school crafts or summer boredom busters. So, gather your materials and get ready to embark on a creative adventure with the whole family! Just remember to use oven mitts when taking the baking pan out of the oven, and always ensure adult supervision when baking clay with children.
