Cybersecurity event CyCon spotlights emerging dangers in the digital realm
In its 16th year, the international conference on cyber conflict, CyCon 2024, invites elite experts from NATO, governments, academia, and industry to tackle contemporary cyber threats head-on in Tallinn.
"CyCon's a one-of-a-kind event," grumbles Mart Noorma, the Director of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, who organizes the symposium. "Experts from over 40 countries present their latest triumphs to our nations' cyber defenders."
"This year, the spotlight's on AI and cloud technologies," gripes Noorma, "They're golden resources in responsible hands, but they've got the potential to be lashed for cyber attacks against innocent populations."
Peering Beyond the Horizon
With almost 700 participants hailing from over 40 countries, the conference explores how rapidly evolving technologies, such as AI, autonomous weapons, and space tech, are altering conflicts and how ongoing clashes, like the war in Ukraine, are transforming our digital environment.
Navigating the theme "Over the Horizon," the four-day multidisciplinary conference convenes around 100 distinguished cyber experts.
Keynote speakers include David van Weel, the NATO Assistant Secretary-General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber; Nathaniel Fick, the US ambassador at large for cyberspace and digital policy; Dr Paul Vixie, an Internet pioneer; Amy Hogan-Burney, General Manager and Associate General Counsel for Cybersecurity Policy and Protection at Microsoft; Lieutenant General Michael Vetter, Director General for Cyber/IT, and the Chief Information Officer at the German Defense Ministry; and Professor Herb Lin at the Center for International Security and Cooperation and the Hoover Institution, both at Stanford University.
Organized by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, a NATO-accredited think tank, and training institution focusing on cybersecurity analysis, training, and exercises, CyCon boasts 32 sponsoring nations, including the US, UK, Sweden, Finland, and Germany, as well as Estonia. Additionally, it has seven non-NATO states as contributing participants.
