"Depression Prohibition": Paul's Perspective

Revamped Narrative:

Hey, ya'll!

In that raw and real way, Paul's life in his twenties was a battleground with depression. Now, well into his thirties, he's still wrestling with crushing anxiety. So, what did Paul do? He took matters into his own hands, albeit in a peculiar manner. That's what caught the eye of Denis Côté, a top-shelf filmmaker known for his films like Curling, Catalogue of Recovered Images , and Mademoiselle Kenopsia*. In his film simply titled Paul*, Côté paints a portrait of a freakin' one-of-a-kind guy.

First off, the film kicks off with an emotionally-charged sequence where we see Paul traverse an array of sterile spaces (loft, hallway, museum, snowy landscape, and so on), giving off a clinical vibe. Then, Côté lets Paul introduce himself through an Instagram video. "Yo, I'm Paul, I'm 30 years old and clock in at 300 pounds. I lost an entire decade to such deep depression that I can't even remember my twenties," he says.

So what compelled Paul to step out of his shell and eventually "save his life"? Cleaning for others—take something nasty and make it shine again, and knowing he did it. It's the thrill of it all that gives him a boost.

Now here's the interesting part: Paul doesn't clean just any homes. Most of his clients are dominatrices, to whom he voluntarily submits in more ways than just cleaning. When asked about it on the internet, he chimes in, "I clean to serve women, which gives me pleasure."

Being dominated and let go allows Paul to navigate his depression and anxiety. He's eloquent and insightful about the situation, especially when he speaks about the benefits he derives from these encounters towards the end.

Bold and Playful

Denis Côté's camera never passes judgment or makes the audience squirm. Instead, it captures genuine curiosity and openness. And it'd be wrong to think Côté is only interested in the kinky aspect of things; he's not. As we watch Paul's "methodical" cleans, we see him evolve online. We witness his online following grow and his video-taking skills improve.

This flick is heartwarming, hilarious, and unnerving, all in one. It's like nothing else, yet Denis Côté manages to perfectly explore its eccentricity.
