Hauling Hard Facts: Jamo Lasse Randhahn Exposes Truth About Cargo Securing in Digital Expert Talk

Breaking Down the Tough Topic of Cargo Securing, Jamo Lasse Randhahn, a logistics student from Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, sparked conversation about the true effectiveness of stretch film in securing cargo during transport.

His findings, shared with a whopping 1,600 participants at a digital further training event organized by Bremer Battermann & Tillery GmbH, delved into the strength behavior of stretch films, a topic that's been a subject of debate among cargo securing specialists.

Cargo Security: The Non-Negotiable Factor

The proper securing of goods during transit is non-negotiable. Neglecting it could lead to serious accidents due to shifting cargo. Jamo Lasse Randhahn, a transport and logistics student at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, has not only completed an internship at a company dealing with such cases but also written his bachelor's thesis there. Battermann & Tillery GmbH, an international surveying office, was his partner in this investigation.

A Matter of Opinion? Not Quite

Opinions on the use of stretch film in cargo securing range from deeming it unsuitable to overestimation. However, according to Jamo, the verdict cannot be that black and white. "The film can do a lot, but only under certain conditions. It depends on the number of wraps and how well it was packed. Not all films are the same in terms of shape stability and tear resistance," says Jamo.

On the Horizon: Greener Film

Moving forward, research is being conducted on environmentally friendly materials like paper, aiming for the film to hold securely with fewer wraps from a sustainability perspective.

From Damage Cases to Online Expert Talk

During the one-hour expert talk, moderated by CEO Nico Nölder, Jamo presented typical damage cases in transport that could be traced back to insufficient securing of the load unit with spiral-wound stretch film. He discussed the characteristics of different films and applicable test standards, and made recommendations on how to prevent transport damage in the future.

Notable Names on Board

In addition to Jamo, Prof. Dr. Dieter Heimann, head of the packaging laboratory at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, participated in the online format. The event was streamed online from the premises of Bremer Streamlab Studios & Events GmbH in Bremen.
