Dortmund University of Applied Sciences to Participate in Christopher Street Day

Dortmund University of Applied Sciences will be participating in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Dortmund on August 16, 2025. This event, more than a colorful festival, is a significant act of solidarity for queer persons facing discrimination and violence in Germany.

In a time when queer persons in Germany face discrimination, hate speech, and violence, and populist movements, social polarization, and increased queerphobic incidents make every act of solidarity particularly significant, the university's participation reflects its commitment to values of diversity, equality, and social inclusion.

Prof. Dr. Ute Fischer from the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences explains that public institutions like universities set an example and are highly visible. The university sees the CSD as an opportunity to actively shape democracy and show its colors in the public sphere.

The university will be present at the street festival on Dortmund's Friedensplatz with an orange-colored vehicle - the Citroën HY. Rainbow flags will be flying at the university's campus locations during the event.

From 3 pm, there will be a street festival on the Friedensplatz with a stage program and information stands of local clubs and organizations. The CSD in Dortmund starts with a demonstration march from Dortmund Central Station (north side) at 1 pm.

Dortmund University of Applied Sciences values diversity, equality, and social inclusion, and its students and employees identify as tolerant and open-minded. The university gives expression to these values not only within the campus but also beyond it.

The university's educational mission includes not only conveying knowledge but also actively shaping democracy and positively impacting the outside world. The university sees itself as an active part of society and takes its role as a societal actor seriously, especially in politically and socially challenging times.

Worldwide, people openly identifying with the LGBTQ+ community face massive human rights violations, even state-sanctioned persecution. Prof. Dr. Ute Fischer emphasizes the importance of standing up for fundamental values in times of increased hatred and violence against those who think differently.
