DRC Adopts Blockchain Technology to Combat Diploma Forgery
In a significant stride towards digital modernization, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has launched a blockchain-based platform called 'Certification and Authentication of Diplomas' (e-diplôme platform) [1][3]. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Higher and University Education, aims to combat diploma fraud and streamline administrative processes in education.
The e-diplôme platform securely stores and verifies academic diploma records on a blockchain, ensuring their authenticity and preventing forgery or alteration [1][3]. This move addresses a serious challenge in the country, as a 2023 government audit revealed that nearly 30% of diplomas submitted for verification were fake or unverifiable [1].
By using blockchain, the platform provides a real-time verification tool for employers, universities, and other stakeholders, making the confirmation of academic credentials faster, more reliable, and transparent [3]. This will not only simplify procedures for graduates but also reduce verification delays and limit human errors [2].
The DRC is also deploying broader blockchain solutions to improve government administrative efficiency. One such initiative is the rollout of a national digital identity system called DRCPass, developed with Singapore-based Trident Digital Tech [2][4]. This blockchain-based digital ID system enables single digital identities for accessing multiple government services, potentially simplifying administrative processes across sectors, including education.
The DRCPass system supports secure, streamlined identity verification that could assist in digital record-keeping and service access, including reading academic credentials in an integrated public service environment [2][4].
The launch of e-Diplôme was formally presented by the Congolese government during a Council of Ministers meeting held on July 18 in Kinshasa. This marks a transformative moment in the digital modernization of the national education system [5]. The broader goal of the e-Diplôme platform is to establish the DRC as a regional leader in digital education administration across Central Africa [6].
The DRC's approach to digital transformation reflects a growing trend in which African governments are exploring emerging technologies to address governance challenges and build digital resilience. The adoption of blockchain for credential verification could serve as a model for other countries in Central Africa and beyond [7].
