**Dr. Aaron Thompson: A Trailblazing Leader in Kentucky's Education Sector**

Dr. Aaron Thompson, the President of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), has been making waves in the education sector with his exceptional leadership and commitment to improving postsecondary education in Kentucky.

Thompson's career in education began at the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) in 2009, where he started as the senior vice president for academic affairs. After a successful tenure, he rose through the ranks to become the executive vice president before being appointed to the top job in 2017, following a brief stint as interim president at Kentucky State University.

Thompson's leadership has been celebrated for his visionary approach, deep commitment to student success, and tireless advocacy. In 2024, he received the Exceptional Leader Award from the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO), and in 2025, he was honoured with the prestigious James Bryant Conant Award from the Education Commission of the States (ECS).

Under Thompson's leadership, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education has taken significant steps to improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of education in the state. For instance, they approved tuition and mandatory fee ceilings for resident undergraduate students for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years, aiming to keep education affordable.

Moreover, they secured nearly $489,000 in grant funding to establish Collegiate Recovery Resource Centers on Kentucky college campuses, providing support for students in recovery from substance abuse. Thompson's efforts have also contributed to increasing Kentucky’s working-age population attainment rate for postsecondary credentials to 56.2%, moving closer to the state’s 2030 educational goals.

Thompson's achievements are a testament to his dedication and passion for education. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and political science from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), where he later returned as a professor after receiving his Ph.D. From EKU, he moved on to the University of Kentucky to pursue advanced degrees in sociology.

In 2019, Thompson was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame, recognising his significant contributions to advancing higher education access and success over his 40-year career. The Education Commission of the States (ECS) has also acknowledged Thompson's leadership and commitment, stating that it has significantly improved the landscape of higher education and economic opportunity for Kentucky students.
