Education Commences in the Counties of Segeberg and Pinneberg
As the new school year approaches, authorities in Schleswig-Holstein are taking steps to ensure a safe traffic environment for the youngest students. The Police Directorate Bad Segeberg, in collaboration with local police forces, is focusing on traffic control and enforcement to make the school route safer for the upcoming 2025/2026 school year, which begins on Monday, 08.09.2025.
Several measures have been put in place to promote safety. For cyclists, four yellow spoke reflectors (two per wheel) or reflective stripes on the tires are prescribed, along with non-slip, securely mounted pedals with two yellow reflectors per pedal (one facing forward and one backward). A bicycle must also have two independent brakes, such as a hand and rear wheel brake, for the safety of children's bicycles. A functioning bell that is not too quiet is required as well.
For those who prefer to walk, it is recommended to wear a helmet, and children should dress in bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility. Parents are also encouraged to practice the school route together with their children, avoid morning rush, and arrange to meet other parents.
In addition, motorists are legally obligated to drive in a manner that does not endanger children in traffic. Parking and stopping should only be done at permitted places, not directly in front of the school entrance. Increased speed checks will be conducted near schools and school routes in the coming days.
The Police Directorate Bad Segeberg is raising awareness about the special school-related traffic situations, especially for young children. They highlight the increased risk of accidents near schools and bus stops due to unpredictable reactions from children, as well as the fact that children often cannot yet accurately estimate distances and speeds.
To further promote safety, a white lamp in front (battery/accumulator operation permitted) and a white front reflector (can be integrated in the lamp) are prescribed for cyclists. A red rear light (also battery/accumulator operation permitted) and a red rear reflector (can be integrated in the rear light) are required as well.
Letting your child walk a short distance (e.g., a few hundred meters before the school) can foster independence while still maintaining a safe environment. Appropriate child seats and restraint systems should be used in cars.
By implementing these measures and raising awareness, the authorities aim to create a safer traffic environment for the upcoming school year, ensuring a smooth start for students in Schleswig-Holstein.
