Education technology company Craydel expands its operations to Burundi and Tanzania in its latest move across Africa.

Craydel Expands Across Africa, Bolstering Edtech Market

Craydel, a Kenyan education startup, has made significant strides in the African edtech market, expanding its operations to Burundi and Tanzania. This marks the company's sixth and seventh markets across the continent, as it continues to push toward profitability.

Founded in 2021 by Manish Sardana, John Nguru, and Shayne Aman Premji, Craydel is the first Kenyan education startup to build a continental footprint. The company's management has signalled further market launches are on the horizon.

Craydel's AI-powered university matchmaker tool aims to put control back in learners' hands, offering seamless access to technology that allows them to search, match, and apply to their best-fit universities. This innovation broadens options for African students exploring various career paths, as an estimated 400,000 African students study abroad each year.

The startup's expansion is its fourth in under a year, and it has raised more than $2.5m in venture funding from investors, including Enza Capital and Angaza Capital. Craydel's growth stage is now underway, according to its co-founder and CEO, Manish Sardana.

Sardana also mentioned that Craydel is expanding operations through partnerships with more overseas educational institutions. Universities and colleges listed on Craydel's site pay commissions for each student enrollment they receive. This business model allows Craydel to offer its services free of charge to students.

While Craydel faces competition from global players like ApplyBoard and IDP Education, it is betting on a locally-rooted, pan-African model for an edge. By understanding the unique needs and challenges of African students, Craydel is well-positioned to offer tailored solutions and support.

As Craydel continues to grow, it is poised to make a significant impact on the African edtech market, which is estimated to be worth about $30 billion annually. With its focus on student empowerment and localised solutions, Craydel is set to lead the way in Africa's edtech revolution.
