Holy Cross Students Find Refuge and Connection at Joyce Contemplative Center Retreats

The College of the Holy Cross offers a unique opportunity for students to step away from the hustle and bustle of campus life through retreats at the Joyce Contemplative Center. Located less than 20 minutes away in West Boylston, Massachusetts, this serene center provides a scenic view and a tranquil environment for spiritual growth, personal reflection, and community building.

Recently, on September 27th, 45 first-year students visited the Joyce Contemplative Center for a weekend retreat. The retreat, known as The Big Chill, focused on reflection, rejuvenation, prayer, journaling, small group reflection, and talks from student mentors. The primary goal was to provide a dedicated time and space away from daily distractions to foster personal growth, prayerful meditation, and connection with their faith community.

The Joyce Contemplative Center is not just a location for Holy Cross students; it is also a home for retreats that help with reflection, prayer, and recharging. These retreats offer opportunities for spiritual deepening, quiet reflection, communal prayer, and engagement in contemplative and meditative practices.

Facilitated sessions encourage theological and spiritual insights, quiet times are set aside for personal contemplation and meditation, and community-building is fostered through group prayer and dialogue. Exposure to spiritual teachings and practices is designed to support vocational discernment and emotional renewal.

While specific retreat programs at the Joyce Center are not extensively detailed, they often emphasize enhancing compassion, spiritual awareness, and a contemplative aura beneficial for students’ mental and spiritual well-being. The integration of prayer, presentation, and quiet reflection cultivates a supportive environment for holistic spiritual development.

Holy Cross encourages students to prioritize self-care in addition to being for and with others. Retreats like The Big Chill Retreat are offered by the College to give students a break from their busy lives and take time for self-care.

The connections made with other people were considered the most important aspect of the retreat. The Joyce Contemplative Center provides a space where students can meet new people and build stronger relationships, making it an invaluable resource for the Holy Cross community.
