Expansion in the count of post-secondary degree recipients noted
In 2024, a significant milestone was reached in German higher education as approximately 511,600 students and PhD candidates obtained degrees, marking a 1.9% increase from the previous year, according to a report issued by the Federal Statistical Office.
Engineering was the second most popular field of study, accounting for 25% of the degrees awarded. Mathematics and natural sciences followed closely behind, accounting for 11% of the degrees. Law, economics, and social sciences were the most popular fields, accounting for 41% of the degrees. Humanities were the fourth most popular, accounting for 9% of the degrees.
The number of PhDs completed in 2024 was 28,200, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. In the field of medicine, 7% of degrees were achieved. The total number of master's and state examination degrees that qualify for teaching increased by 5% compared to the previous year, although the exact number of teaching degrees was not included in the reported figures.
The remaining 6% of degrees were distributed among fields such as sports, forestry, or art sciences. Of the teaching degrees, 19,100 were bachelor's degrees, 20,200 were master's degrees, and 10,400 were state examination degrees.
The search results do not provide specific information about which university in Germany awarded the most engineering degrees in 2024. However, they indicate that 25 percent of all German university degrees in 2024 were in the field of engineering sciences, but no individual university ranking by number of engineering graduates is mentioned.
A total of 31,000 traditional university and artistic degrees, such as state examinations outside of teaching, were completed. Every tenth degree in the past year was in teaching (49,700). The number of bachelor's degrees awarded in 2024 was 245,600, a 0.8% increase from the previous year. The number of master's degrees awarded in 2024 was 149,300, also a 1.9% increase from the previous year.
This surge in degree completions highlights the continued commitment of German higher education institutions to providing quality education and fostering intellectual growth.
