Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in B.C. Funded by $22.7 Million from Canada

The Government of Canada has announced a significant investment in expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the country, with a focus on British Columbia. This funding will result in more than 850 EV chargers being added across Canada, addressing range anxiety for Canadians considering zero-emission vehicles and improving access for current EV drivers.

Since 2016, Ottawa has committed over $1 billion CAD to EV charging infrastructure. This latest investment is part of a larger $25 million CAD (approximately $18 million USD) support for 33 projects across the country. The funding for the 480 EV chargers in British Columbia is a key part of this larger investment.

Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada, stated that with today's announcement, 480 EV chargers will be installed in high-demand areas and along busy highway corridors in British Columbia. The new chargers will be installed along major highways, in public spaces, at workplaces, and in multi-unit residential buildings.

The investments aim to build a cleaner, more secure, and more competitive economy. Tim Hodgson, Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, stated that the projects deliver practical solutions to improve EV charging availability for British Columbians. The projects are part of Canada's efforts to become an energy superpower.

The funding for these projects is in partnership with provincial utilities and municipalities. However, specific information about which organizations are working on the eight projects to expand the electric vehicle charging infrastructure in British Columbia has not been provided.

It's worth noting that the federal EV rebate program remains suspended, with Ottawa promising to reintroduce it in the future. The goal of these investments is to improve access to EV charging infrastructure, addressing range anxiety, and supporting Canada's transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
