Exploring Miniature Creatures: A Bug Hunting Adventure

In the heart of summer, the Spectacular Summer Science series is underway, and on Day 4, the participants embarked on an exciting adventure – a minibeast hunt. The event attracted a group of enthusiastic girls, who, fascinated by bugs and insects, are not easily deterred by the creepy-crawlies they might encounter.

During the hunt, the girls discovered a variety of minibeasts, from flies and beetles to possibly spiders. Beetles, with their three main parts – the head, thorax, and abdomen – were among the creatures they encountered.

To make the minibeast hunt even more engaging, observation forms were downloaded from Twinkl, encouraging the girls to write about their findings. Spider lifecycle diagrams were also printed off from Twinkl, providing a fascinating insight into the lives of these eight-legged creatures.

The minibeast hunt was just one of the many activities planned for the summer science series. On Day 1, the girls baked Baking Soda Ice Cubes, adding a dash of baking soda to coloured ice cubes and watching as they fizzed when vinegar was added. Day 2 saw the girls learning about friction and other forces through a Slipping and Sliding activity.

To help the girls identify the minibeasts they might encounter, a free Minibeast Spotting Sheet will be available in 2025. This sheet, designed with large fonts and a colourful design, will feature common garden minibeasts such as ladybirds, earthworms, ants, spiders, butterflies, caterpillars, beetles, and more.

Emma Vanstone last updated the summer science series on July 8, 2025, ensuring that the activities remain relevant and exciting. The series, designed to promote curiosity, outdoor activity, and understanding of local wildlife, is a hit among the participants. For those interested in creating their own minibeast spotting sheets, inspiration can be found on gardening or educational websites, where downloadable sheets can be customized according to local fauna.
