Exploring the Variety in Islamic Interpretations - Key Ideas in Modern Islamic Debates
In an effort to equip students with the necessary tools to navigate the digital landscape, a new learning series has been developed. Titled "Concept Worlds Islam", this web video series addresses the intricacies of Islamic terms in the context of the social web and popular platforms like YouTube.
The teaching materials, organised into eight tailored modules, are designed to cater to different levels of demand and can be utilised in various subjects and grades within secondary schools. The modules, each focusing on a specific Islamic term, are named as follows:
- Module 1: What does 'umma' mean?
- Module 2: What does Jahiliyyah mean?
- Module 3: What does bid'ah mean?
- Module 4: What does Zone of War mean?
- Module 5: What does Jihad mean?
- Module 6: What does halal/haram mean?
- Module 7: What does Caliphate mean?
- Module 8: Islam and Knowledge
Each module delves deep into the historical context, multiple levels of meaning, and the ideologically charged use of these terms, particularly in media discourse. The series also sheds light on concepts such as identity(ies), community(ies) - both online and offline - and the relationship between knowledge and faith.
The materials, which form the basis of these learning modules, are accessible on the DVD or the our website-Mediathek. Each module has its own dedicated webpage on the website, as indicated in the links provided.
The project, which gained popularity among YouTubers in 2015 and received support from scientists, was created or contributed to by experts in Islamic studies, including scholars and educators specialising in the field. Media literacy skills promotion is a key aspect of the materials, ensuring that students are well-prepared to engage critically with the digital world.
