Elisabeth-Lange-Schule in Harburg Celebrates First Graduating Class and Plans for Future Expansion

In a significant milestone, the Elisabeth-Lange-Schule (ELS) in Harburg, Germany, celebrated the graduation of its first class on Thursday. The event was marked by a palpable sense of achievement, as 60 students registered for the first 11th grade, and 34 have now obtained the university entrance qualification. An additional 18 students have secured the technical college entrance qualification.
The school's reputation at Ehestorfer Weg has significantly improved in recent years. For a long time, it was not favourably regarded, but under the leadership of Tobias Langer for the past seven years, the school's image has undergone a dramatic transformation. In the past, over half of the students were assigned and didn't want to be at the school. However, this year, ELS had the second-highest registration numbers of all neighbourhood schools in Hamburg.
The personal interaction among members at the Elisabeth-Lange-Schule is a positive feature that is valued and respected. This close-knit community is one of the reasons for the school's success, with everyone still knowing everyone else. The head of the upper school department, Benjamin Christ, is proud that so many students have achieved their Abitur in the first round.
The school's success has led to high demand for the new school year. According to Benjamin Christ, the demand for places at ELS is high from external students. However, due to limited resources, only 58 new students will be accommodated in the upper school this summer.
To address this issue, a new building with over 5,000 square meters for the upper school, a gym, a cafeteria, classrooms, and specialist rooms is currently being planned. The new building will be constructed on the school grounds, replacing old buildings that are being demolished to make way for the expansion.
The new facilities will provide much-needed space for the growing student population and will include state-of-the-art classrooms, libraries, and recreational spaces. The school will also incorporate digital tools and platforms to enhance learning experiences and access to resources.
