In the heart of Germany, the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt continues to grapple with a significant teacher shortage as we move through 2025. To tackle this pressing issue, the region has introduced pedagogical teaching assistants as part of a broader strategic approach to combat teacher scarcity and foster youth career exploration in education.

These pedagogical teaching assistants, often with relevant educational support roles, play a pivotal role in alleviating the immediate pressure caused by the shortage of fully qualified teachers. They assist with classroom management, offer individualized student assistance, and help maintain educational quality despite gaps caused by insufficient teacher numbers. This approach is not exclusive to Saxony-Anhalt; it forms part of a nationwide effort, including cross-border cooperation, to manage the teacher supply challenge across Germany.

While precise data on the exact scale of teaching assistant deployment in Saxony-Anhalt may be limited, it is evident that such measures serve as a practical stopgap while longer-term recruitment and training initiatives are developed.

The teacher shortage in Saxony-Anhalt is further complicated by regional demographic shifts. The state has experienced declines in the young population and child numbers, which in turn complicates the education system’s planning and staffing.

Efforts to attract English-speaking early childhood educators, who must meet language and certification requirements, indicate ongoing recruitment strategies aimed at diversifying and expanding the teaching workforce.

By the end of September, interviews are scheduled for selected applicants for the pedagogical teaching assistant positions. However, it's worth noting that three positions for pedagogical teaching assistants did not receive suitable applications, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education. On a more positive note, almost all advertised positions for pedagogical teaching assistants received formally suitable applications. In total, 360 interested parties applied for the 152 advertised positions of pedagogical teaching assistants.

As Saxony-Anhalt continues to navigate the teacher shortage, the role of pedagogical teaching assistants provides much-needed relief for schools, offering a temporary solution while long-term strategies are put into place.

  1. The pedagogical teaching assistants, who are contributing to the nationwide effort to address Germany's teacher shortage, are primarily focusing on aspects of classroom management, individualized student assistance, and maintaining educational quality as a temporary solution.
  2. As a longer-term strategy, the region is also developing initiatives for vocational training in education-and-self-development, aiming to graduate more professionals for vocational training roles within the community policy, ultimately enriching the diverse backgrounds of teachers and teaching assistants.
