A Word from the Wise: Navigating Math Exam Challenges
Ever felt stumped by geometric problems in exams? Well, you're not alone. Recent studies show that these very issues are causing headaches for students tackling the Unified State Exam in Mathematics. Here's the lowdown, straight from the horse's mouth, as shared with TASS by Elena Rudakova from Novosibirsk Pedagogical University.
Graduates are encountering roadblocks with tasks 5 and 9-12 in the first section of the exam. These tasks demand acute mathematical skills, including complex probabilistic calculations, solving text-based problems, and wrestling with graphs of mathematical functions. The hurdles arise due to the extensive mathematical operations, particularly in tasks 9 and 11. Miss a simple calculation, and you can easily lose a point. Bummer, right?
On the brighter side, students are acing trigonometric equations, inequalities, and practical tasks in tasks 12, 15, and 16. That's because these tasks have a standard structure. However, problems arise with geometric tasks 14 and 17, each potentially worth three points. Last year, less than 5% of students managed to conquer the stereometric task 14, with roughly 10% solving the planimetric task 17. Tasks 13-17 are fabled for their complexity, while 18-19 are renowned for being fiendishly difficult.
Interestingly, this year's profile mathematics exam appears to be more arduous than its predecessors in 2018 and 2023. And yet, the number of students scoring 60 or more points went up by 10.8% over the last year.
Now, if you're wondering about other interesting tidbits, here you go:

In the realm of education-and-self-development, one might find it beneficial to focus on strengthening their mathematical skills, particularly in the areas of complex probabilistic calculations and solving text-based problems, which have been causing trouble for some students in recent exams. Through continual learning, one can improve their ability to wrestle with graphs of mathematical functions and avoid losing points due to simple mathematical errors.
