High School's Football Field Suffers a Fiery Destruction; Graduation Celebrations at Hollywood Bowl Carry a Bitter Taste
A Huge Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl
The graduation ceremony for Palisades Charter High School in 2022 was a grand event held at the iconic Hollywood Bowl. After a tough year marked by the Palisades fire that devastated their stadium, students were thrilled to walk across such a prestigious stage.
The Hollywood Bowl, a Los Angeles landmark, has hosted some of the greatest acts in history, from the Beatles and Franklin D. Roosevelt to Aaron Copland. It was a fitting venue for the 740 graduating seniors from Palisades Charter High School to celebrate their hard-earned achievements.
Although the Hollywood Bowl wasn't their beloved Stadium by the Sea, which they usually held their ceremonies at, students and staff learned to adapt. The Palisades fire in January had disrupted their lives, causing many students to leave the school, and some faculty and board members also lost their homes.
Initially, students returned to online classes before transitioning back to in-person learning at a temporary Santa Monica location that once housed a Sears. Despite the difficulties, the graduation ceremony at the Hollywood Bowl served as a capstone for their resilience.
As the big day approached, senior Cash Allen expressed mixed feelings, noting, "There's just been so many memories - so not being able to finish out the four years of high school on that field is definitely sad." Yet, Allen added, "I think everyone also is grateful that we get the opportunity to walk at the Hollywood Bowl."

In a show of solidarity and support, the Los Angeles Philharmonic's board of directors offered to gift the Hollywood Bowl to Pali High for their graduation. Although the school paid a small usage fee for the venue, it was considered a generous gesture given the usual rental costs.
Making Adversity Easier:
For Nancy Fracchiolla, Pali's longtime theater teacher, the Hollywood Bowl ceremony marked both a thrilling send-off and a departure from tradition. As she prepares to retire after 13 years at the school, the iconic venue provided a unique backdrop for her final remembrance of the Palisades community.
Though the Hollywood Bowl offered an unforgettable setting, the ceremony followed standard traditions, including student performances and heartfelt speeches from various speakers. Despite the unusual circumstances, families of graduates found comfort in the familiarity of the celebration, with Isabelle Rust noting, "I think that they're feeling just like any other high school graduating class, which is - with everything that the majority of these kids have been through - the most beautiful thing they can have."
In the end, the graduation was a celebration of resilience and a testament to the strength of the Palisades community. As Allen pointed out, "This class has been through more than most." And, like seniors everywhere, they marked their milestone by tossing their mortarboards into the air, bringing the ceremony to a rousing close.
