Highlighting the Scripps College Students: Sawyer Brand Takes Center Stage
Student Researcher Sawyer Brand Explores Deep-Water Mass Stirring in Argentine Basin
Sawyer Brand, an undergraduate student at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), is delving into the mysteries of deep-water masses in the Argentine Basin area. Her research paper continues to focus on lateral stirring, a phenomenon that plays a crucial role in the ocean's climate system.
Brand, who is advised by oceanographer Lynne Talley, started her academic journey in oceanic and atmospheric sciences at UCSD. After initially considering a career in renewable energy engineering, she found her passion in the ocean sciences.
Brand's research is rooted in anomalously low dissolved oxygen profiles recorded by local Argo floats, a part of the array deployed by the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling Group (SOCCOM), of which Brand is a member.
Recently, an Argo float recorded two of the type of anomalous profiles that Brand's research is based on, providing valuable data for her study.
Brand's mentors, including Talley, Janet Becker, and Andrew Lucas, have significantly contributed to her career development. Despite her achievements, Brand struggles with imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy that she shares with many of her friends at Scripps.
Brand encourages incoming students to seek help and support when dealing with such feelings. She believes that open dialogue and support from peers and mentors can help alleviate these feelings.
In a typical day, pre-pandemic, Brand would arrive at Scripps at 8 a.m., work in her office between classes, and spend her evenings working on SOCCOM cruise reports, online classes, and her research.
After graduating from Scripps, Brand plans to pursue a PhD and eventually work on sustainable ocean resource management and marine conservation. Her goal is to contribute to the understanding and preservation of our planet's oceans.
