The tradition of designating distinguished professors dates back to the earliest days of the University. The research conducted by the honorees has helped improve lives and shape our understanding of the world. The University Distinguished Professors Dinner, originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recipients from both 2020 and 2021 will be recognised at a future dinner.

In addition to the University Distinguished Professors, other notable faculty received named distinguished service or professorships in 2021 at universities such as the University of Chicago. However, the clearest specific listing for 2021 University Distinguished Professors by name and expertise found is for Anne Donadey at San Diego State University, recognised for her expertise in European Studies and Women's Studies.
