Innovative Projects Showcased at 2025 Invent@SU Exhibitions

Invent@SU, a programme at Syracuse University, recently held its annual final presentations, where eight teams of engineering students showcased their original device designs to industry experts and investors. This year-long programme, led by Professor Alex Deyhim from the aerospace engineering department, challenges students to apply their engineering education to create real-world solutions under tight deadlines.

The teams, consisting of students from various engineering disciplines, spent six weeks designing, prototyping, and pitching their inventions. The projects ranged from practical solutions for older or less mobile golfers to discreet wearables for personal safety.

One such invention, replACE, is a mechanical, pedal-operated golf tee system designed for older or less mobile golfers. The replACE team, comprising Maya Alva '28 (aerospace engineering), Jonah Blanchard '26 (aerospace engineering), Nana Okrah '27 (electrical engineering), and Austin Salmonds '27 (biomedical engineering), developed this innovative device to make golf more accessible for all.

Another notable project was GripSync, a smart grip trainer for golfers. The GripSync team, consisting of Gavin Lesk '27 (mechanical engineering), Barrett Lathrop '26 (aerospace engineering), and Joshua Edwin Limjuico '26 (biomedical engineering), created a device that provides real-time feedback on grip pressure and swing tempo, aiming to improve golfers' performance.

In the competition, the first place winner was WashSentinel, a laundry security device that detects unauthorized access, sends alerts, and prevents theft. The third place went to SAFEINITY, a discreet wearable that sends emergency alerts with location and user information via Wi-Fi. KidKlamp, an easy way to securely install infant car seat bases, came in second place.

However, specific details about the fourth-place project, VentIQ, were not provided. For details on the 2022 winners, additional resources or direct contact with Syracuse University might be necessary.

The AdapTurf team, consisting of Felipe Zuluaga '27 (aerospace engineering), Juan Jose Quintero '26 (aerospace engineering), Cameron Mensah '28 (computer science), and Alsime Gaye (undecided), presented AdapTurf, an outsole system that allows athletes to safely switch footwear for different sports and turfs using a secure dual locking and screw-in design.

The Third Eye team, comprising Alexander Delgado '27 (computer engineering), Angelo Fernandez '27 (computer engineering), and Stanley Gao '27 (computer engineering), presented their clip-on wearable device, Third Eye. This device detects people approaching from behind and sends directional audio alerts, aiming to enhance personal safety.

Invent@SU is sponsored by Michael Lazar, Kim and Michael Venutolo '77, the Lyons Family Foundation, Rajive Dhar G'90, Anita Choudry, and Bill and Penny Allyn. The programme provides students with a platform to develop innovative ideas into prototypes, with the potential for commercial success. The event took place at Invent@SU Final Presentations on June 18.
