At Princeton University, students are delving into a unique learning experience through the university's Research-based Courses. One such course, the BSE Fall Semester Experience, is providing students with a diverse array of skills that extend beyond traditional academics.

One student, enrolled in ARC 205, an interdisciplinary architectural design studio as part of their Urban Studies Certificate, is finding this to be particularly true. As part of the course, students are given weekly drawing assignments to improve architectural analysis skills. With little to no experience in drawing, these assignments often push the student outside their comfort zone.

To help navigate these challenges, the student's instructors have directed them to Lynda, an online learning platform that offers hundreds of videos and activities in various fields, including design software, computer programming, and web development. The student has found Lynda easy to use and its lessons thoughtfully organized, making it an invaluable resource for learning Photoshop and other software.

Lynda, now integrated into LinkedIn Learning, is a comprehensive educational platform offering video-based courses primarily focused on software, design, and business skills training. It provides tutorials taught by industry experts, helping students boost career-related skills, gain certifications, and enhance professional profiles online.

The platform is accessible to every Princeton student through their NetID. It offers courses for beginners through advanced users, with a wide variety of software skills available, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google products, social media platforms, programming languages, and business and soft skills.

In addition to Lynda, the BSE Fall Semester Experience also incorporates the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library and the Digital Learning Lab into its curriculum. The Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library is a treasure trove of historical documents, while the Digital Learning Lab offers resources for papers and provides Macs, tablets, Photoshop, and more for students to use.

The instructors in these courses provide personalized feedback during "Desk Crits" and one-on-one meetings outside of class, ensuring that students receive the support they need to succeed. The class meets for six hours a week to develop drawing, design, and analysis skills, with each session offering a new opportunity for growth and learning.

As the BSE Fall Semester Experience and other Research-based Courses at Princeton University continue, students are finding that these courses offer a unique and valuable learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom. With access to resources like Lynda, the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, and the Digital Learning Lab, students are able to develop a wide range of skills that will serve them well in their future careers.

For more information about the software and resources available to students, a more complete list can be found on the Office of Information Technology website.
