"Japanese Film" Seminar Featuring Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, the Director of Oscar-Nominated "Drive My Car"
The final event in the "Rethinking of MA" series, a four-part webinar series, is approaching. On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, from 5:00 - 6:15 p.m. PST, film director Ryūsuke Hamaguchi will join the "MA in Japanese Film" webinar, hosted by UCLA's Terasaki Center, UCLA's xLab, University of Washington's Japanese Studies program, Asia Society of Southern California, and Japan America Society of Southern California.
The "MA in Japanese Film" webinar is the culmination of a series that has delved into the diverse applications of the concept of MA in art, architecture, food, and now film. MA, which roughly translates to "negative space," is a core philosophy in Japanese culture, symbolizing light beaming through the empty space of a doorway, as Yuko Kaifu, president of our website Los Angeles, explains.
In Japanese films, MA is significant because it creates a rhythm and tension, allowing emotions and atmosphere to develop through what is not said or shown explicitly. This approach contrasts with more fast-paced storytelling styles typical in Western cinema, making MA a defining feature in understanding the pacing and emotional depth characteristic of contemporary Japanese filmmaking.
Hamaguchi, an award-winning filmmaker, will share the application of MA during his filmmaking process. His film "Drive My Car," now in theaters nationwide, has received international acclaim, winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture - Non-English Language and being voted Best Picture of 2021 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. "Drive My Car" is also shortlisted for this year's Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
