Kazakhstan's First Nuclear Power Plant Gets a Name Through National Competition

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced a nationwide competition to name Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant, a historic milestone in the country's energy and innovation sectors. The competition is organized by the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency and aims to encourage creativity and originality.

The plant, currently under construction near the village of Ulken in the Almaty region, is being built in cooperation with Russian company Rosatom. Construction officially began on August 8, 2025. The final name will be selected from the entries submitted following the competition process.

Tokayev emphasized the importance of the plant as a symbol of scientific and technological progress. He stated, "Kazakhstan's future depends on creative, knowledgeable, and dedicated youth." The competition is open for participation, and the winners might have their ideas considered for the final name of the nuclear power plant.

In a ceremony, Tokayev presented medals to students who won at prestigious international olympiads in subjects such as chemistry, mathematics, physics, geography, computer science, and biology. He thanked teachers and parents for raising a generation with high intellectual potential.

Tokayev also highlighted the need for specialists in various fields, including scientists, engineers, teachers, doctors, and artificial intelligence. He cited initiatives such as the Keleshek mektepteri (Schools of the future) and increased support for young scientists as part of broader plans to build a skilled workforce for the future.

The winners of the olympiads received certificates for 1,500, 1,000, and 500 monthly calculation indices (MCIs) for gold, silver, and bronze medalists, respectively. Tokayev stated that specialists in artificial intelligence will be in especially high demand in Kazakhstan.

Through innovation and advanced technology, Tokayev believes that Kazakhstan is laying a strong foundation for the nation's development for decades to come. The construction of the nuclear power plant is a testament to this commitment. The competition to name the plant is a unique opportunity for the people of Kazakhstan to contribute to this exciting journey.
