The No. 8 Clemson Tigers will look to bounce back from their season-opening loss to LSU as they host the Troy Trojans at Memorial Stadium, Clemson, South Carolina, on Saturday, September 6, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Clemson, who dropped from No. 4 to No. 8 in the AP Top 25 following the loss, will be led by quarterback Cade Klubnik, who had a disappointing performance against LSU, finishing with 230 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Klubnik, however, needs just 90 yards passing to become the fifth quarterback in Clemson history to reach 7,500 career yards, joining Tajh Boyd, Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, and Charlie Whitehurst.
Coach Dabo Swinney, who expects and welcomes criticism following the loss, has expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance in the wide receiver position. If Antonio Williams, the second-team preseason All-American wide receiver for Clemson, cannot play due to a hamstring injury sustained in the season-opener, Swinney has stated that Brown will start in his place. Williams' status for Saturday's game is unclear at this point.
Clemson is attempting to improve to 38-10 in games following a loss under Swinney, including season openers following a loss in the previous season finale. The Tigers have a strong record at Death Valley in the College Football Playoff era, boasting the second-best mark in the country during that span.
Meanwhile, Troy won their previous game against Nicholls by a score of 38-20. Troy coach Gerad Parker wants his defensive line to play faster and stop thinking as much following their lackluster performance against Nicholls. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is expected to focus on improving the run game for Clemson against Troy, as they managed just 31 yards rushing against LSU.
Brian Kelly, LSU coach, responded negatively to Swinney's grading, suggesting he may not have seen the second half of the game. However, Swinney, who previously served as an assistant coach at Alabama and Auburn, remains focused on leading his team to a victory on Saturday.
