Local News Highlights for August 23, 2019:
Park University is gearing up for an eventful autumn season, with a variety of engaging activities scheduled for students, faculty, staff, and the wider community. Highlights include the appointment of Dr. Karen Garber-Miller as the dean of the College of Education and Health Professions, a series of thought-provoking lectures, and numerous academic recognitions.
Dr. Garber-Miller, who joins Park University from Avila University, will oversee the College's curricular, personnel, budgetary, and administrative affairs. Prior to her role at Park, she served as the dean of the School of Education at Avila University, as well as the dean and chair of the School of Education and Psychology. Her extensive experience in education will undoubtedly be an asset to the University.
On October 7, Dr. Blanche Sosland will present "Banishing Bullying Behavior: A Call to Action from Early Childhood Through Senior Adulthood" at the David Theater (Alumni Hall) at 3 p.m. This timely discussion aims to address the issue of bullying and provide strategies for creating a more inclusive and respectful environment.
Academic achievements abound at Park University. The University's Parkville Campus was ranked No. 5 by ASecureLife.com on its "100 Most Secure College Campuses in the U.S." list, and Park's online Bachelor of Science degree in management/healthcare was ranked No. 12 by AffordableSchools.net on its "25 Top Value Healthcare Administration/Management Online Degrees (Bachelor's) 2019" list. Additionally, Park's online business degree programs were ranked No. 20 by Study.com on its "Best Online Business Degree Programs" list.
The University's esports program was recently featured in a "KC Voices" podcast produced by KCTV, and a story about rising NBA star De'Aaron Fox and his agent Chris Gaston, '06, appeared on the website ONE37pm.
In the realm of music, the International Center for Music will host a concert by the ICM Orchestra on September 27 at the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel, as well as an intimate evening with Stanislav and Friends on September 20 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. An ICM Orchestra Mini Concert is also scheduled for September 18.
Park University's athletic department will host various events during the weekend of Homecoming and Family Weekend (September 19-21), including the Athletics Wall of Honor Induction Breakfast, Women's and Men's soccer matches vs. Freed-Hardeman University, and the Park University Alumni Association Awards Program.
The weekend will also feature the Park University Golf Scramble, Food and toiletries donations for the Pirate Pantry, and the Laurel DeFreece Mixed Media Art Exhibit. The Park House Celebration and the Student Military Art Exhibit - "Darkest Hour" will also take place during the weekend.
In addition to these events, Park University will host several lectures and discussions, such as "The Status of Peacebuilding Between India and Pakistan," "Gandhi: The First Peace Journalist," and the Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture featuring Stephen Walt.
Other notable events include the International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19, the Fall Recess from October 14-20, and the Fall II Term Beginning on October 21.
Park University alumni, family, and friends are invited to gather for Homecoming and Family Weekend 2019 on the University's Parkville Campus from September 19-21, 2019. The weekend will include various events, such as the Kansas City Area Students/Faculty/Staff Picnic, the Gilbert Campus Opening Convocation, and the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (Ariz.) Campus Commencement. The Minot (N.D.) Air Force Base Commencement and the Fort Irwin (Calif.) Campus Commencement will also take place during this period.
Finally, the University will host the Camp Pendleton (Calif.) Campus Commencement on September 6, and the Fort Leonard Wood (Mo.) Campus Commencement on October 4.
