Macron Warns of Democracy Threats, Calls for European Unity
French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a stern warning about the state of democracy in Europe, emphasizing the need to prioritize science, knowledge, culture, and education to secure democratic order. Speaking at the German Unity Day celebrations, Macron also pledged friendship between France and Germany, marking a significant shift in their historic relationship.
Macron highlighted several threats facing European democracy. He warned that doubts about the rule of law and government manipulations pose an internal threat, while external dangers include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and hybrid forms such as cyberattacks, information manipulation, and airspace violations. The French President also expressed concern about the degeneration of public debate into hateful and violent discourse, fueled by social media.
Macron stressed the importance of Europe forming as a military power for the first time, to defend its territory and values. He noted that if Europeans don't act, those who manipulate social media infrastructure will have won in ten years. To strengthen democracy in Europe, Macron has founded the European Political Community (EPC).
Macron's speech underscored the need for unity and action among European nations to protect their democratic values and institutions.
