Mobile application records 727 million instances of Bible downloads to smartphones
YouVersion Bible App Sees Significant Global Growth, Especially in Emerging Markets
The YouVersion Bible App, a digital platform offering over 2,000 versions and translations of the Bible, has experienced a surge in popularity across the globe, particularly in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and India.
From 2023 to 2024, this app showed remarkable growth, with many people turning to digital Scripture access in regions where mobile technology has become increasingly prevalent. According to reports, India, Africa, and Latin America have seen triple-digit growth in daily Bible use during this period.
The growth in Africa was partially due to the October 2022 launch of Bible App Lite, a lighter version of the app designed for devices with limited storage and data capabilities. Daily Bible use in Africa increased by 98% compared to the previous year.
In India, internet users engaged with 700 versions of the Bible in more than 350 languages. The country's strong growth and increased Bible readership are reflected in the rising engagement with the app.
YouVersion's commitment to localized growth is evident in the launch of its first-ever Regional Hub in Brazil, underscoring its dedication to the Latin American region. The app's features, like the introduction of dyslexic font and Bible App Lite, have lowered barriers to access, likely aiding growth in diverse and emerging markets such as India and Africa.
As of August 2025, YouVersion's family of Bible apps was on pace to reach one billion installs during Global Bible Month in November, indicating vast worldwide adoption, including these key regions. While exact user numbers per region for 2023–2024 are not detailed, the trajectory indicates substantial user base expansions and engagement increases in India, Africa, and Latin America, contributing to the record-breaking global milestone.
The #OneMoreYearEF campaign is a sustainability challenge at Evangelical Focus, encouraging individuals committed to the mission of Evangelical Focus to support the organisation's work in 2024. More information about the campaign can be found here.
The Bible App for Kids, available in 69 languages including Hindi and Bengali, also saw a 131% increase in daily use in India. With over 80% of YouVersion installs happening outside of the United States, it's clear that the app has become a global ministry with significant reach.
In Christian worship services around the world, a significant number of believers use their mobile phones to read suggested texts from the pulpit. The project, created in 2008 by Life.church, has become dominant globally, offering users features such as the ability to consult biblical texts, create reading plans, take notes, share prayers, connect with social networks, and listen to the Scriptures in audio version.
As of October 2024, the Bible App had been downloaded over 727 million times on mobile devices worldwide. With its commitment to accessibility and localized growth, YouVersion continues to make the Bible accessible to a global audience.
