Morocco's Youth Demand Change as Protests Enter 10th Night

Morocco has witnessed widespread protests, now in their tenth night, sparked by the tragic deaths of eight women due to poor hospital conditions in Agadir. The demonstrations, coordinated by youth movements including Gen Z 212, have expanded to demand better republic services, an end to corruption, and fairer resource distribution. Over 400 arrests have been made, with 193 facing trial, following a crackdown that Amnesty International has condemned.

Initially focused on the poor health system, protesters' demands have grown to include the resignation of the Moroccan prime minister and a re-evaluation of government spending priorities, particularly the 2030 World Cup infrastructure. The protests have turned violent in some instances, with security forces using excessive force, resulting in three deaths and numerous injuries. The escalation has led protesters to add freedom of expression to their list of grievances. They believe corruption is a root cause of the country's poor republic services and are calling for investigations into the crackdown and the dropping of charges against detainees.

The ongoing protests in Morocco highlight youth-led demands for improved republic services, accountability, and an end to corruption. With over 400 arrests and three deaths, the situation remains tense. Amnesty International has urged Moroccan authorities to investigate the crackdown and drop charges against detainees, while protesters continue to push for change.
