In the charming city of Neuss, Germany, an exciting event is taking place this September. For the first time, a record number of 27 kindergartens are participating in the annual "Playway instead of Sidewalk" action, which is part of the European Mobility Week.

This creative initiative, supported by the city of Neuss and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, encourages children to use their artistic talents to transform the city's sidewalks into vibrant, inviting play areas. The colourful games created by these young artists not only make walking more enjoyable but also contribute to the city's goal of promoting the safe and independent mobility of its youngest residents.

The "Playway instead of Sidewalk" action is funded partially by the state of NRW and has been carried out for several years. It is gaining more popularity each year, with families of the participating kindergartens cordially invited to join in the fun this year. The city of Neuss provides free materials for the action, including posters, spray chalk, and information flyers.

The event aims to make the mobility needs of the youngest visible and to train behaviour in traffic. Dahlia Busch, the mobility manager of the city of Neuss, states that the action encourages a conversation about sustainable mobility among children, parents, and institutions. Norbert Krause, an artist, has developed a special "Playway" action box, which is used in the implementation of the action.

Christoph Höltgers, Neuss city councilor for planning and mobility, stated that promoting the safe and independent mobility of the city's youngest is an investment in the future. He added that the European Mobility Week, which will take place from September 16th to 22nd in Neuss, invites municipalities worldwide to promote and make sustainable mobility forms tangible.

Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW, an organisation supporting the "Spielweg statt Gehweg" campaign in Neuss and searching worldwide since 2002 for communities to promote sustainable mobility, is the driving force behind this campaign. The European Mobility Week campaign, initiated by the European Commission since 2002, aims to encourage the use of sustainable and healthy means of transport for children.

By participating in this event, the children of Neuss are not only having fun but also learning valuable lessons about traffic safety and sustainable mobility. The creative movement offers resulting from the action bring fun and contribute to the independence of children, making the city a more enjoyable and vibrant place for all its residents.
