New construction erected in Köpenick: school building
New Three-Story Elementary School Breaks Ground in Berlin-Köpenick
Berlin, Germany - A new era began in Berlin-Köpenick on Thursday as the Richtfest for a modern, sustainable elementary school was celebrated. The construction of this school, which is set to be completed in 2026, is a significant milestone in the urban development of the Stellingdamm area.
The total cost of the project is approximately 48.5 million euros, and it will create more than 430 additional seats, providing much-needed relief to nearby schools. The school is being built in modular form and will accommodate 432 students upon opening.
The school site is partly part of the historic ensemble of the former Gaswerk Köpenick, which was built at the end of the 19th century. Part of the historic buildings on the site will be retained and integrated into the school ensemble. The protected clock and control house, for instance, will serve as a school library, media lab, and meeting place for parents and children, open to the neighborhood.
The design of the modern campus is integrating the historic fabric of the former Gaswerk Köpenick. Sustainable materials and a recycling concept will be used in the construction of the new school building. Photovoltaic systems, rainwater management, and green roofs will also be installed to ensure the school's eco-friendliness.
The new school construction is the start of a new urban quarter at Stellingdamm. It is part of a larger urban development concept that includes apartments, green spaces, and social facilities. The institutions involved in implementing this urban residential quarter include project developers, local district planners, and the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing. They conduct participation procedures together with local residents and district stakeholders to ensure coordinated planning and execution.
The school is designed as a Compartment School, with classrooms and shared spaces grouped around a central forum. Parts of the school will be open to neighborhood initiatives outside of school hours. The sports hall, for example, will be barrier-free and available for local sports clubs, in addition to physical education classes.
The new school building will be certified according to the "Sustainable Building" rating system with a "Silver" quality level. The historic buildings of the gasworks in the south will be converted for cultural and neighborhood offerings. The Senate administration, district, planners, and future user groups are working closely together on this project, ensuring a bright future for education and community in Berlin-Köpenick.
