Grand Canyon University Nursing Student Alyssa Parinas Receives National DAISY Award

Alyssa Parinas, a nursing student at Grand Canyon University, has been honoured with the prestigious DAISY Award by the DAISY Foundation. The accolade is bestowed upon exceptional nurses for their clinical care, with nominations coming from patients, their families, or organisations.

Parinas, who is set to graduate next semester, hails from San Diego and views nursing as a way to give back to people by helping them heal. Her faith has instilled a deeper compassion and a passion for helping others, shaping her nursing philosophy. She asks herself, "What would Jesus do?" when faced with challenging situations.

Parinas' dedication to her patients was evident during her rounds at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center, Norterra Phoenix, where she provided extra care to a patient. This act of kindness did not go unnoticed and led to her receiving the DAISY Award.

Upon her return to San Diego, Parinas plans to continue her calling to nursing. She has a particular interest in serving in the intensive care unit due to the one-on-one patient connection it allows. For Parinas, patients are people in need of her help, not entities.

Parinas initially considered following her sister into radiology but ultimately decided to follow her brother into nursing. Her perspective on nursing is focused on being there for the person in need. She finds the human connection in nursing to be important, as it can often get lost in the process.

Parinas grew up attending religious schools and her faith has played a significant role in shaping her nursing career and philosophy. Dr. Tristan Palmer, director of clinical operations for the bachelor of science in nursing program at Grand Canyon University, praised Parinas for her exceptional nursing skills and professionalism.

Parinas' award was patient-driven, a testament to her commitment to her patients. As she continues her nursing journey, Parinas aims to be the light in someone's day, serving as a beacon of hope and compassion.
