"On March 24, a documentary featuring the review of Park University's Valor Medals will be unveiled"
News Article: Valor Medals Review Project at Park University
The George S. Robb Centre for the Study of the Great War at Park University is set to launch the Valor Medals Review Project, an initiative aimed at rectifying historical injustices in the awarding of valor medals to minority veterans who served during World War I.
The project, which was initiated in September 2018, is a research task undertaken to identify and provide recommendations for the U.S. Congress and the Department of Defense to actualize. The focus is on service members who may have been unjustly denied awards due to race or religion.
A total of 214 servicemembers have been identified for review, including 105 Jewish Americans, 73 African Americans, 23 Native Americans, 12 Hispanic Americans, and one Asian American. The criteria for eligibility is based on existing precedent used by Congress since the 1990s, with the exception of Native Americans who are included due to their World War I service predating the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.
Bipartisan bills (H.R.2249 and S.1218) were introduced in Congress in April 2019, with Park University being the driving force behind these bills. The bills also waive the statute of limitations associated with any cases identified by the review, authorizing the award of a Medal of Honor to any individuals identified by the DOD in the study.
The Valor Medals Review Project is separate from the documentary "More Than a Medal" which will debut on March 24, 2022. However, a question-and-answer session will follow the premiere of the documentary. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.
Coincidentally, Medal of Honor Day, a U.S. federal observance, will be celebrated the day following the documentary premiere on Friday, March 25. The event will feature remarks by Alex Goldstein, Clark Slater, Tim Westcott, and Nathan Marticke.
