Only 1.8% of LD/ASC Individuals Employed in D2N2 Region

In the D2N2 region, only 1.8% of working-age individuals with Learning Disabilities (LD) and/or Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) are employed, significantly lower than the national average of 4.8%. To tackle this, the Connected Futures (CF) Partnership was established in the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) to address employment barriers for young people with LD and/or ASC.

The CF Partnership launched the Youth Voice Ambassador (YVA) programme in 2023, employing five young people with LD and/or ASC to lead commissioning for better employment opportunities. This programme is a case study to understand how youth-led commissioning works in practice, its unique value, and potential for systems change. Government organisations and practitioners recognise the importance of involving service users, including young people with LD and/or ASC, at every stage of service commissioning, development, and delivery.

The YVA programme, launched by the CF Partnership, aims to improve employment prospects for young people with LD and/or ASC in the D2N2 region. By involving these young people in commissioning processes, the programme seeks to create more inclusive services and better employment opportunities.
