Police Launch 'Safe School Route' Action for Youngest Road Users

As hundreds of first-graders and other children return to school in the Reutlingen jurisdiction, the Police Headquarters Reutlingen launches the 'Safe School Route' action, focusing on the safety of the youngest road users. This comes after 33 school route incidents in 2024, with four children seriously injured.

The action, starting September 15, 2025, combines awareness-raising and coordinated controls across all four districts. It aims to educate and sensitize road users, especially on school routes, pedestrian crossings, and bus stops. First-graders, with little road experience, are particularly vulnerable. The police advise against using 'parent taxis', encouraging independent walking to school.

The Prevention Department has produced videos using hand puppets to teach first-graders about road safety, available at https://kleines-zebra.gib-acht-im-verkehr.de/daskleinezebraundlucy/.

Correctly securing children in cars with seat belts and child restraint systems is crucial. Without appropriate child seats, they are seven times more likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries. Parked vehicles can also pose hazards, especially on sidewalks, crossings, or pedestrian crossings.

The 'Safe School Route' action emphasizes the importance of considerate driving, reduced speed, and preparedness to brake around schools. It also highlights the need for proper child restraint systems in vehicles. The police's commitment to road safety is evident in their educational efforts and coordinated controls, aiming to create a safer environment for the youngest road users.
