Chittagong University Central Students' Union Election Scheduled for October 12 After 35-Year Gap
After a gap of 35 years, the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) election is set to take place on October 12. A total of 931 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the CUCSU election and various hall unions, with 429 candidates contesting in the CUCSU election and 502 standing for various hall unions.
Several student groups have registered to contest the election, including Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir, the left alliance group Droho Parshad, Chhatra Union, Bishwo Insaniyat Front, Sarbojonin Shikkharthi Sangshad, and the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad joint panel, among others. The Chittagong University unit of Chhatra Dal has nominated Sajjad Hossain Hridoy for vice president, Md Shafayet Hossain for general secretary, and Ayubur Rahman Toufiq for assistant general secretary.
The Islami Chhatra Andolan has launched a new group called Socheton Shikkharthi Sangsad (Conscious Students' Parliament). Islami Chhatra Shibir has fielded a 26-member panel with Ibrahim Hossain Rony for vice president, Said Bin Habib for general secretary, and Sajjad Hossain Munna for assistant general secretary.
A new non-political student organization called Sarbobhauma Shikkharthi Oikya (Sovereign Students' Unity) has been announced. Swatantra Shikkharthi Jote (Independent Students' Alliance) has fielded Abir bin Jabed as its Vice President (VP) candidate. Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilan (Independent Students' Convention) has nominated Mahfuzur Rahman for the Vice President (VP) position.
A coalition of eleven leftist organisations has formed the panel Boichitrer Oikya, nominating Dhrubo Barua for vice president, Sudarshan Chakma for general secretary, and Jakirul Islam Jasim for assistant general secretary. SM Mushfiq Hasan has been nominated as the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate for Sarbobhauma Shikkharthi Oikya. Md Abdur Rahman has been nominated as the General Secretary (GS) candidate for Socheton Shikkharthi Sangsad, while Aminul Islam Rakib has been nominated as the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate for the same group.
Among the candidates, 356 are for boys' halls and 146 for girls' halls. The election promises to be a significant event in the university's history, with a diverse range of candidates and groups vying for positions such as Vice President and General Secretary. The results of the election are eagerly awaited by students and faculty alike.
